Dalton Castle

The name is a little misleading. Sure it’s in Dalton, but the title ‘Castle’ makes it sound a lot bigger than it actually is.

It’s actually a pele tower, built in the 14th century to provide a safe haven for the monks from Furness Abbey when marauding mobs from Scotland were in the area.

Owned by the National Trust it contains a small museum with a display dedicated to George Romney, a famous 18th century portrait painter born in Dalton.
