Dalton Castle

The name is a little misleading. Sure it’s in Dalton, but the title ‘Castle’ makes it sound a lot bigger than it actually is.

It’s actually a 14th century pele tower, built to provide a safe haven for the Furness Abbey monks when marauding Scottish mobs were in the area.

Owned by the National Trust it houses a small museum with a display dedicated to George Romney, a famous 18th century portrait painter born in Dalton.

Dalton Castle is situated on the Market Place in the centre of Dalton-in-Furness. For opening times visit the National Trust website. Admission is free.
