Furness Abbey
Situated in a peaceful valley on the outskirts of Barrow, the ruins of this Cistercian monastery, is one of the area’s most popular tourist attractions.
Furness Abbey was founded in 1123, though most of the red sandstone structure left standing today date from the 12th and 13th centuries.
An English Heritage visitor centre here explores the history of the abbey.
