Blackburn Attractions & Things To Do
Visitors can explore the history of Blackburn and its people at the Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery. Galleries include displays detailing the town’s former status as the textile capital of the world and the story of its large Asian population.
Public artwork has played an important role in the modern-day development of Blackburn town centre. One of the first pieces commissioned was the ‘Healing of the Nations’ by Mark Jalland. This abstract circular steel and copper piece hangs on the façade of Blackburn Cathedral and contains thousands of fibre optic cables that create changing patterns of light.
More recent works include The Braid by Simon Watkinson at Sudell Cross, Possibility on Fleming Square, Colourfields at Corporation Park, and The Woven Globe and Transition, both on Church Street.
King Georges Hall is the town’s major theatre and attracts top class performers from the worlds of music, dance, and comedy. Other venues offering live performances include the Thwaites Empire Theatre and Darwen Library Theatre.
There are two Vue cinemas in the Blackburn area; a 10-screen multiplex close to the town centre and a 4-screen cinema in Accrington.
Witton Country Park is a vast country park with a couple of fantastic play areas that kids will love while Sunnyhurst Wood is a great place to go for a relaxing walk.
Blackburn offers an excellent choice of sporting facilities. The Blackburn Ice Arena is the only ice skating rink in Lancashire and Waves is a town centre water park with a slide, wave machine and more. Other sporting attractions include the Bowlplex tenpin bowling alley and the Powerleague Soccerdome.
Blackburn Rovers FC is the town’s professional football team. They play their fixtures at Ewood Park. Tickets are not difficult to purchase. The stadium rarely sells out, even when Blackburn are playing other teams from North West England such as Bolton Wanderers, Everton, Manchester City, and Liverpool.
