Darwen
The market town of Darwen lies 3 miles south of Blackburn and is overlooked by Darwen Tower. This local landmark is situated on the top of Beacon Hill and was built in 1898 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Visitors can climb to the top of the 85 ft tower and using the plaques at the top make out much of the Lancashire landscape, including Blackpool Tower and more.
During the Industrial Revolution, the town was a centre for textile production. One striking remnant of these days is India Mill, with its striking brick chimney. Sunnyhurst Wood lies to the west of Darwen and is a popular spot for walking and picnics.
