Blackpool Trams

Electric trams have been operating on Blackpool’s seafront since 1885 and until relatively recently was the UK’s only surviving tram service. The line runs for approximately 12 miles from Squire Gates through Cleveleys and on to Fleetwood. Perhaps the best time to see them is during the Blackpool Illuminations, when they are decorated with lights.

Feb 2008 - Sir Peter Hall, the chairman of Blackpool’s regeneration company is leaving his post to lead a bid for European funds to build an extension of Blackpool’s tram system to Preston. The proposed system will utilise a new type of tram developed in Germany that uses a hybrid power system capable of switching from electric to diesel power to run on non-electrified tracks.

Some of the trams still in use date back to the 1930's.
