Rivington
The village of Rivington lies 7 miles to the north west of Bolton and shot to fame during the 2002 Commonwealth Games when it was the location for many of the cycling events.
Lord Leverhulme (founder of what is now Unilever) made a number of contributions to the area, including building Lever Park, with its ornamental gardens, and a scale replica of Liverpool Castle [map] on the banks of Rivington Reservoir.
The Great House Barn [map], about 10 minutes walk from the village, is Scandinavian in design and is thought to be over 1,000 years old. Today it houses a café and gift shop that stocks brochures about the area.
Rivington Hall Barn [map] is similar in design to the Great House Barn and holds regular dances and concerts. It’s also a popular meeting spot for bikers.
The area is dominated by Rivington Pike [map] and Winter Hill, the location of the TV mast that serves much of North West England.
