Brampton
The small market town of Brampton dates back to the 7th century and lies in the Irthing Valley, around 9 miles east of Carlisle and 2 miles south of Hadrian’s Wall. Overlooking the market square is the town’s most distinctive building, the octagonal Moot Hall. Built in 1817, it now houses Brampton’s Tourist Information Centre.
Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed here in 1745 during the siege of Carlisle. After being defeated by the English, six of his supporters were hanged on the Capon Tree. The tree has now gone but a plaque marks its location.
