Settle to Carlisle Railway
The Settle to Carlisle Railway is widely acknowledged as the most spectacular railway in England. The line opened in 1876 and took engineers 6 years to build. It stretches 72 miles from Settle, in the Yorkshire Dales, to Carlisle, and passes across 17 viaducts and through 14 tunnels.
Regular services are offered by Northern Rail and there is no need to book in advance. Private companies occasionally run steam and diesel charters on the line.
