National Waterways Museum

Ellesmere Port developed with the opening of the Shropshire Union Canal in the late 19th century (and subsequently the Manchester Ship Canal). The National Waterways Museum at the former canal port explores the town’s industrial heritage and features:

  • Canal Boat – Take a 30 minute trip on a canal boat and discover the history of the Shropshire Union Canal
  • Island Warehouse – Originally built to store grain, this 19th century warehouse houses exhibitions exploring boatbuilding, the social history of canals, and the history of the Manchester Ship Canal
  • Power Hall and Pump House – Restored steam and diesel engines
  • Blacksmith’s Forge
  • Porter’s Row – Four restored dockworker’s cottages
  • Toll House – Temporary exhibitions

Facilities include a café and gift shop, and free car park.
