Wainwright's Yard

Wainwright’s Yard is a small shopping centre in Kendal town centre. It opened in 2002 and is named after Alfred Wainwright, author of the famous Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells.

The biggest store here is a large Booths supermarket. The high quality store boasts fantastic deli, meat and fresh fish counters. It also features a speciality food shop and restaurant, Artisan. The seasonal menu makes full use of local products including handmade bread from Kendal’s own Staff of Life bakery.

Armstrong Ward is a lifestyle store offering products hand-selected by its owners. Products include ceramics from Emma Bridgewater and New England style bedding from the Lexington Company.

Hadwins Technological stocks electrical goods from top brands such as Sony, Panasonic and Bose while La Maison offers handcrafted solid oak furniture.

Other business at Wainwright’s Yard include Box2 (ladies fashion), Gear (home interiors), Loewe Galerie (premium home entertainment systems), Tog 24 (outdoor and ski wear), and a Pizza Express restaurant.

Opening times vary by store. For example, Booths opens 7 days a week, 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday, and 9.30 am to 4 pm on Sunday while La Maison is open Monday to Friday 10 am to 5.30 pm and Saturday 9.30 am to 5.30 pm.

Signs at the entrance give offer some interesting information about Alfred Wainwright and his connections with Kendal. There’s also pleasant public square here with several slate sculptures inscribed with pages from his books.
