Bassenthwaite Lake

Bassenthwaite Lake is the most northerly of all the major lakes and measuring 4 miles long is one of the largest. Although situated just 3 miles from Keswick it is not one of the most popular lakes, mainly because most of its shoreline is privately owned.

The lake is home to a rich variety of wildlife. It is one of only two places in Britain where vendace, an endangered species of fish, is found.

The village of Bassenthwaite lies around 1 mile to the east of the lake. Skiddaw towers above the whole area.

The male osprey has now returned after spending the winter in Africa. Everybody is now waiting for the female to come back.

Since 2001 there's been a pair of ospreys nesting at Bassenthwaite, remarkable since they hadn't nested in England since the early 19th century. They are usually here between April and August. Staff from the Osprey Project are also available and can provide telescopes.
