Coniston Water

Measuring five miles long and half a mile wide, Coniston Water is the third largest lake in the Lake District. The village of Coniston lies at its northwest tip.

It was made famous by Donald Campbell’s many attempts to break the world water speed record and was the inspiration for Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons.

Coniston Launch and the Steam Yacht Gondola offer cruises on the lake. Boat and canoes can be hired from the Coniston Boating Centre. Brantwood, the most magnificent country house in the Lake District, lies on its eastern shore.
