Grasmere (Lake)

Just one mile long and half a mile wide, Grasmere is one of the smaller lakes of the Lake District.

The lake is heavily associated with the poet William Wordsworth and lies just south of the picturesque village of Grasmere.

Walk Around Grasmere

The walk around the lake is an easy and flat 3½ miles. Start in the village at Sarah Nelson’s Grasmere Gingerbread Shop and walk east along Redbank Road, past the Dale Lodge Hotel, and then south towards the lake.

The road meets the lake at the Faeryland Tea Garden, where you can sit and enjoy tea, coffee, ice cream and light snacks. Boats can also be hired here.

After here continue down Redbank Road parallel to the western shore of the lake. After about half a mile, take the path that leads down to the lake. This then runs along the western shore for another half mile to the southern tip, lying below the crags of the Loughrig Fell.

From here admire the magnificent views up the lake before crossing the footbridge and taking the A591 along the eastern shore. After walking along the road for around half a mile, you’ll come to Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum. Take a look around and then head back to the village along Stock Lane.
