Lakes of the Lake District
It may come as a surprise but the only body of water in the Lake District with the word ‘Lake’ in its name is Bassenthwaite Lake. Most of the others use ‘mere’ or ‘water’ in their title.
The major lakes in the park are:
| Name | Notes |
|---|---|
| Bassenthwaite Lake | The most northerly of all the major lakes. |
| Coniston Water | Made famous by Donald Campbell’s many attempts to break the world water speed record. |
| Derwent Water | Just a few minutes south of Keswick. |
| Grasmere | Wordsworth composed much of his poetry here. |
| Haweswater | Home of the only Golden Eagle in England. |
| Thirlmere | Reservoir built by the Manchester Corporation. |
| Ullswater | Regarded by many as the most beautiful of the lakes. |
| Windermere | The largest of the lakes. |
