Location & Directions

Affleck’s is located in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, at the junction of Church Street, Dale Street, and Tib Street.

The nearest car parks are the NCP car park on Tib Street and the NCP multi-storey car park on Church Street.

Shoppers travelling on the Metrolink should exit at Market Street. Afflecks is just 100 yards away along Tib Street.

History

The market was established as Affleck’s Palace in the early 1980s by Elaine Walsh. It took its name from previous tenants, the Affleck and Brown department store.

Affleck’s Palace subsequently became the shopping destination of choice for many of Manchester’s biggest names in music such as the Happy Mondays and Inspiral Carpets. Wayne Hemingway of Red or Dead and Tom Bloxham of Urban Splash also launched their businesses here.

In 2007 it looked destined to close after Elaine Walsh decided not to renew her lease on the building with landlords Bruntwood. However, in early 2008 Bruntwood took over the management of the market, rebranding it as Afflecks.

Afflecks is going stronger than ever with many new stalls, a photographic studio and an art gallery.
It is now fully let and the place to come to buy anything that's NOT mainstream.
Open late till 7:00pm all Thursdays in December and open EVERY Sunday throughout December

14/4/08 - Manchester’s alternative shopping emporium Affleck’s Palace has been saved from closure. Many feared that the popular Northern Quarter haunt would close after founder Elaine Walsh’s 25-year lease expired last year.
Owners Bruntwood have taken over management and have vowed to keep it open without significantly changing its off-beat focus. It was re-launched on Saturday as ‘Afflecks’.

It will be a real shame if it closes. Many of Manchester's top designers and entrepreneurs founded their businesses here. Vicky Martin started here and now has a shop in the Triangle and Tom Bloxham the owner of Urban Splash once had a stall too.

When Affleck's closes, Manchester will become just another faceless city. Where will I get all my lovely clothes from now? Topshop..? Ergh!

To loose Affleck's Palace would be to loose a precious jewel - so many wonderful edges to the place. Where else is there such a forum for all the creative people past and present? I started going in my teens and now in my 40's still get such a buzz from visiting.

That building has been there for over a 100 years, It's probably a listed building! Besides what are they going to do? We don't need more flats and it's the worst area in Manchester to build flats! Plus those 5000 people who've signed the online petition are going to do everything they can to stop anyone moving into them if they do close Affleck's in revenge!

Afflecks palace must not close. It is the only reason that my friends and I travel from our tiny town to Manchester in order to spend money. They mustn't close it.

Afflecks simply CANT close!! How can some people be as stupid and down right not well int head to use one of Manchester's most iconic buildings for flats!! Where will I get my clothes from!! It ain't right!! DON'T CLOSE AFFLECKS!!

You can't close afflecks, loads of people would have to walk around naked. Well I would rather than wear the clothes that other shops sell. But getting back to the point, I know so many people who live in dorset and portsmouth who want to do the 7 hour journey just to by some decent clothing! For manchester's sake, don't close afflecks!

My mum has been taking me there since I was little and I still go. It’s part of Manchester’s history. We can’t let it get turned into flats.

The building lease ends in June and the management of Affleck's Palace and the owners of the building have yet to sign a new lease. Many fear that the stores may close. This would be a real shame for the city.
