VisitBritain and the AA carry out quality assessments of hotels in the UK in order to provide an indication of the standards of accommodation guests can expect to find.
Generally speaking, 3 star hotels provide a good level of quality and comfort. Specifically, a 3 star hotel will have most of the following characteristics:
- Dining room/restaurant offering a cooked breakfast 7 days a week (unless the hotel has been classified as a Town House Hotel)
- Dining room/restaurant serving evening meals 7 days a week (unless the hotel has been classified as a Metro Hotel or a Town House Hotel)
- Licensed bar
- Open 7 days a week during operating season
- Proprietor/staff available during day/evening
- Reception
- Registered guests have access to the hotel at all times during the day and evening without a key
- Access available outside these times
- Room service (hot/cold drinks and light refreshments) during day and evening
- One room service meal (continental breakfast or dinner)
- All bedrooms en-suite
