Northern Quarter - Manchester

Manchester’s Northern Quarter is renowned for its independent bars, boutiques, cafes, music and clothes shops. It is a place where residents and visitors can purchase unusual and unique products and soak up a Bohemian atmosphere.

Affleck’s Palace is perhaps the most famous of the stores in the area. It’s an old building that now houses several floors of independent stalls and boutiques. The Northern Quarter is also extremely popular with DJ’s. Shops include Beatin’ Rhythm, Eastern Bloc, Fat City Records and Piccadilly Records.

Bars, clubs and restaurants in the area include Dry Bar, Matt and Phred’s, the Frog and Bucket, North and Sankey’s Soap. None of these could be classified as mainstream.

I'm a big fan of Matt and Phreds. It's not as pretentious as some of the other bars in the Northern Quarter. The owner is a really nice guy too. I remember when my friend was really, really drunk in there. The owner was really nice and just asked him to leave. He was very polite and almost apologetic. At many bars in Manchester the bouncers would have just thrown him out on the street.
