Petersfield
Petersfield lies to the south of Manchester city centre, bounded by Deansgate, Whitworth Street, Oxford Street, and Whitworth Street West.
The area is dominated by the Beetham Tower, currently the tallest building in Manchester and home to the Hilton Manchester Deansgate hotel.
Another major building here is the Manchester Central Convention Complex, the main conference and exhibition space in the city. Housed inside the old Manchester Central train station it was previously known as GMEX (Greater Manchester Exhibition Centre).
The Bridgewater Hall opened in 1996 and is an international concert venue that hosts more than 250 performances every year. It is home to the Halle, BBC Philharmonic, and the Manchester Camerata. Barbirolli Square is the open space outside the venue, named in honour of John Barbirolli, a famous conductor of the Halle orchestra. A prominent feature here is the Ishinki Touchstone, a large abstract sculpture by Japanese artist Kan Yasuda.
The Great Northern is an entertainment and leisure venue housed in a former goods warehouse. It is home to the AMC multiplex cinema, Manchester 235 casino, and several shops and restaurants.
Deansgate Locks lies to the south of Petersfield and is one of the most popular nightlife destinations in Manchester.
Places to stay include the 5-star Radisson Edwardian hotel and the 4-star Midland Hotel, both on Peter Street, the Jury’s Inn, and the Hilton Manchester Deansgate.
There are two Metrolink stations in Petersfield; St Peter’s Square to the north Deansgate-Castlefield to the south. The closest train stations are Oxford Road and Deansgate.
Car parks include the NCP car parks at Manchester Central Convention Complex and the Great Northern.
