Kings Dock Arena Wind Turbines Approved

Liverpool City Council has given planning permission for two 20 m wind turbines to be built at the new Kings Dock Arena. It is hoped that they will generate 10 percent of the venue’s electricity requirements. The arena is scheduled to open in early 2008. A similar project was recently approved at the City of Manchester Stadium.

Rare Rothschild Giraffe Born at Chester Zoo

Chester Zoo has a new resident. Molly was born at 10.30 am on Monday and is the first Rothschild giraffe to be born at the zoo. The birth was important as there are only 600 Rothschild giraffes left in the wild in Kenya and Uganda.

World Pie Eating Championships

The World Pie Eating Championships will take place at Harry’s Bar in Wigan on December 13. For the first time, the annual event includes a vegetarian category. Wigan is widely recognised as the world capital of pies and pie eating.

Mann Island Plans Unveiled

An exhibition showing plans for the redevelopment of Mann Island has gone on show at the Merseyside Maritime Museum. The ambitious project includes a new Museum of Liverpool and extension of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. The exhibition runs to December 21.

Rail Changes on the Horizon

Network Rail is a considering a number of options to cope with an anticipated 13% rise in passengers using the North West’s trains over the next 10 years. These include relocating Salford Crescent station, an additional train every hour between Manchester and Blackpool, more platforms at Manchester Piccadilly and making better use Manchester Victoria.

Genesis Concert Tickets Sell Out

All tickets for the Genesis UK concerts sold out within just a couple of hours of going on sale yesterday. The band are playing at Manchester United’s Old Trafford Stadium and Twickenham Stadium in London on July 7 and 8 2007 respectively.

The Resurrection of the Traumatizer

Blackpool Pleasure Beach has revealed plans for a new ride for 2007. Infusion, a suspended looping coaster travelling over water, will be a reconstruction of the old Traumatizer ride at the now defunct Southport Pleasureland. The new ride will be built on the site of the old log flume. Guess who predicted this the day after Southport Pleasureland closed?

Are Wigan Athletic Really That Boring?

A Birmingham couple were ejected from the JJB Stadium after being caught having sex in the disabled toilets during the game between Wigan Athletic and Aston Villa. The Wigan Observer reports that staff became suspicious after noticing that the door had been locked for a prolonged period and heard moaning sounds coming from within. The newspaper reports an onlooker as saying ‘It was quite obvious they weren’t disabled’. The game itself ended scoreless.

Plans for regeneration of Bury approved

Bury Council’s planning committee last night gave the green light to the £200 million regeneration of the town’s eastern quarter. The Rock Triangle development is expected to be finished by 2009.

Bolton Christmas Lights

Bolton’s Christmas lights will be switched on at 6 pm November 26 by comedian Dave Spikey. After the switch-on a free Christmas festival will be held in the Victoria Hall.
