Bury Football Club have named former Gigg Lane favourite Alan Knill as their new manager. Knill made 144 appearances for Bury as a central defender between 1989 and 1993. He joins the club from Chesterfield FC, where he held the post of assistant manager since being sacked as Rotherham manager in March 2007.
Preston will host the national Dragon Boat Championships at the city’s Riversway Festival this summer. Dragon Boat Racing originated in China more than 2,000 years ago. Each boat measures around 40 feet and carries a team of 20 paddlers, 1 drummer and 1 helmsman. The Riversway Festival will be held at Preston Docklands from July 4 to 6 2008.
The highest restaurant in the UK opened in Liverpool today. Situated, on the 34th floor of Beetham’s West Tower, the Panoramic restaurant offers unrivalled views of the city centre and waterfront. The Beetham West Tower is a 40 storey residential apartment block on Brook Street on Liverpool’s waterfront, next to the Radisson SAS Hotel.
A ferry struck by a freak wave in the Irish Sea has run aground off Blackpool. The Riverdance, a roll-on roll-off freight ferry operated by Seatruck Ferries, was sailing from Northern Ireland to Heysham, near Morecambe. Four passengers and nine crew members were rescued at 7.30 pm last night. The remaining nine crew members, who stayed with the ship to try and refloat her, were later airlifted to safety.
