Work on Penrith New Squares redevelopment to begin later this year

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Work on a shopping and housing development in Penrith town centre should begin before the end of the year.

Last week Sainsbury’s Plc and Eden District Council signed the necessary agreements to take the stalled Penrith New Squares project forward.

The revised scheme includes a Sainsbury’s store, car park, retail link, and residential units, scheduled for completion within 2 years. A retail area around Common Garden Square should be completed within the next 5 years.

Councillor Gordon Nicolson said “Whilst there is a longer timescale to the scheme in the current economic climate this is a more realistic approach and one that is being followed across the whole country for schemes of this type. This agreement means that Penrith New Squares will provide a boost to the regeneration of Penrith and will contribute to improving the viability of the town centre.”

Bury set to Rock to the beat

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

The Rock, shopping and leisure destination is inviting the local community to help celebrate the launch of the development, by taking part in the Bury Beat Parade – an exciting feature within The Rock’s official launch programme on 16th July.

The Bury Beat Parade is a creative community initiative, which local schools and community groups from across the Bury area are being invited to take part in by entering artwork into The Rock flag art competition.

Letters to schools within Bury’s six towns have been issued asking pupils to participate in the competition by illustrating ‘What part of their local community are they most proud of?’. All the entries will be collated and a special judging panel, made up of representatives from The Rock, Bury Council, Bury Art Gallery, Museum & Archives and the Bury Times, will decide on the winning entries and which schools take part on launch day in the Bury Beat Parade.

The schools from each town will be invited to represent their area in the Bury Beat Parade carrying the flag displaying the winning artwork. The procession will bring together some 180 children, who will parade through The Rock led by a team of musicians and performing artists. Each team of children will be assigned their own colours, flags and t-shirts.

The launch will herald a new era for the town when The Rock opens its doors for trading, as it is the largest new retail scheme to be completed in the UK this year. The event promises to unite Bury with a spectacular day of celebration, colour and history, which will commemorate all that is special about Bury.

Commenting on the launch David Laycock, Centre Director for The Rock said: “The Bury Beat Parade will create a real buzz in the town in the run up to opening. Getting the local schools involved in this project and engaging with the community will help to form the heart of The Rock. We want this development to capture the real essence of Bury, which is why we have opened our plans for the launch out to the wider community and schools. We hope that the people of Bury are as excited as we are about opening this fantastic scheme.

“The Bury Beat parade is just one part of the fantastic programme of events that we have put together for the launch day. The 16th July will be a big day for Bury and we want everyone to put the date in their diaries and expect something special.”

Mrs Robinson, Head Teacher of St Marie’s R C Primary School said: “The school is extremely excited to be a part of such a momentous event for Bury. The Rock is a long awaited addition to the town and we are pleased that the local community it going to play such a big role in the celebrations. The children cannot wait to get involved in the launch day programme.”

Public inquiry into Tithebarn development begins today

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Today sees the start of the public inquiry into the Preston Tithebarn development.

This independent public inquiry, which is being held at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, will decide on whether planning permission should be granted for this retail led mixed use re-development of the eastern part of Preston City Centre.

Preston City Council, Lancashire County Council and developers Lend Lease are submitting a strong case in support of Preston Tithebarn as Council Leader, Councillor Ken Hudson explained:

“Tithebarn is a much needed development for Preston and Central Lancashire. Tithebarn has wide ranging support from Lancashire County Council, the North West Development Agency and others and we look forward to making our case at the inquiry. We hope the inquiry will rule in favour of Tithebarn so that Preston can fulfill its undoubted potential.”

The Tithebarn development is a retail led regeneration of part of Preston City Centre. It includes a new bus station, revitalised Preston Markets, a new cinema, cafes, bars as well as new offices and homes. Tithebarn also includes a new John Lewis and Marks and Spencer anchor stores, as well as other improvements to shopping in the city.

In July 2009, Preston City Council resolved that it was minded to grant planning permission for the Tithebarn development.

However, the planning application was “called in” by the Government and a public inquiry was ordered.

The public inquiry is now taking place and is expected to last around six to seven weeks. The inquiry is chaired by two independent planning inspectors who after hearing all the evidence, will make a recommendation to the Government. The City Council is expecting to learn the outcome of the public inquiry around the end of 2010, when a final decision on the scheme will then be made by Government.

Cheshire Oaks Visitor Information Centre opens

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

An innovative new tourist information centre has been unveiled at Cheshire Oaks.

The initiative offers a showcase for Cheshire’s visitor economy for more than seven million visitors who flock to the outlet village each year, many travelling more than an hour to reach the destination.

They’ll also have access to high quality service and information designed to help them make the most of their visit to the area.

The new centre, which replaces an existing facility, is the result of a partnership between the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), destination management organisation Visit Chester & Cheshire and McArthur Glen.

Staff will have a high level of product knowledge and the emphasis of the service will be on meeting and exceeding visitors’ specific expectations.

“This is a huge opportunity to access a massive and growing visitor base, many of whom are travelling from farther afield to visit Cheshire Oaks,” said Visit Chester & Cheshire’s Chief Executive, Chris Brown.

“This is a timely improvement to the quality of information facilities that will encourage visitors to stay longer, spend more and return more often to explore the vast range of Cheshire’s visitor opportunities, among them food and drink, accommodation, events, and gardens.”

Colin Wilding, General Manager of McArthur Glen Cheshire Oaks added: “This is a further milestone in the close relationship that has been established between MacArthur Glen and Visit Chester & Cheshire, one that will generate significant benefits for Cheshire Oaks and the wider visitor economy in Chester and Cheshire.”

The new visitor information centre is the latest in a series of major investments made by the NWDA to improve the provision of visitor information across Cheshire and the whole of the Northwest.

Nick Brooks-Sykes, Director of Tourism at the NWDA said: “Our aim is to have a modern network of well located visitor information centres across the whole of the Northwest. This investment in Cheshire Oaks Visitor Information Centre will ensure it is able to provide an excellent visitor experience as well as a top quality signposting service for Cheshire and the wider Northwest region.”

Multi-storey car park opens in Bolton

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Bolton’s second new multi-storey car park will open today.

The Topp Way multi-storey car park has been built in a joint project by Bolton Council and National Car Parks (NCP).

The opening follows the completion of the flagship Deane Road multi-storey car park in December.

The four-storey facility on Bath Street contains 794 spaces and it will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The car park will also house Bolton’s first town centre ‘Changing Places’ facility, for profoundly disabled people. As well as a toilet it features a changing bench and a ceiling hoist, which is operated electronically and can be used to lift people. The facility, on the ground floor, will open on March 29.

The town’s Shopmobility service, currently on Le Mans Crescent, is also moving in at the end of the month.

The car park boasts green credentials with an intelligent lighting system, which ensures that lights are only switched on in parts of the car park that are in use, or where natural lighting is insufficient. There are also five charging spots for electric vehicles.

Councillor John Byrne, Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Development, said: “The car park will play a significant role in supporting future developments in the town centre and should also bring in new visitors. The ground floor lobby also includes space to accommodate potential small retail outlets as a future development.”

Mike McNeil, NCP’s Bolton Manager, added: “We were delighted to team up with Bolton Council in producing this state-of-the-art parking facility. We hope the Topp Way multi-story car park with its extra facilities will offer something much more than just a place to park for work or shopping visits.”

Tariffs start at £1.40 for the first hour with a four hour stay costing £3.40. Contract parking is also available.
