Famous pub reopening
January 17th, 2008Lancaster’s John O’Gaunt pub is to reopen this weekend after mysteriously shutting its doors last week. The closure of town centre pub, famous for its live music, is rumoured to be related to a tenancy dispute.

after being a regular for many years, though i’ve been in aberdeen for the last 5, i was saddened to see the pub shut when i was back in lancaster last month. i’d really like to know what happened -the pub was always busy when i lived in lancaster. we hear a lot about the loss of good pubs and though there seems to be a feeling that this is inevitable, i’m not so sure…If it’s a rural pub there’s an acknowledgment that a clearly identifiable community is losing a vital resource. When it’s a town pub like the J o’G then, for me, it is often the same story and there is a ‘community’ left damaged and scattered to alternatives or just stopping in at home. i’d guess the gregson and the yorkshire house will pick up a few refugees. (incdentally, the yorkshire house was very often empty -how can that survive when the john is closed? weird and not very wonderful world of capitalism i suppose.) anyway, i’m going to write a book about the death of good pubs and the ways that they can be saved (i’ll be re-reading ian marchant’s ‘longest crawl’ for a bit of research and looking to the old crown in hesket newmarket for a good example of a community buy out -and would appreciate any comments from lancaster to -petebarnes25@hotmail.co.uk.
