US pair agree Liverpool takeover

February 7th, 2007

Americans George Gillett and Tom Hicks secured a deal yesterday that will see them take control of Liverpool Football Club. The US pair will become co-chairmen, current chairman David Moores will be made an honorary life president, while Rick Parry will continue to run the club as chief executive. The takeover follows the last week’s collapse of the bid from Dubai International Capital.

The businessmen, who both own NHL ice hockey teams, have promised to invest over £200m in the club. Their plans include building a new stadium at Stanley Park, selling naming rights to the stadium to fund player transfers, and new TV deals.
