Alston
Alston is England’s highest market town and lies 20 miles to the north-east of Penrith (the A686 between the 2 towns is widely regarded as one of the UK’s most scenic routes). The surrounding countryside is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, while the town itself is famous for its cobbled streets and 17th century buildings.
The town is on the C2C cycle route, and the Pennine Way, the first and one of the best known National Trails in the UK. It is also the southern terminus of the South Tynedale Railway, a narrow gauge steam railway offering trips through the South Tyne Valley during the summer months.
Leaflets for local attractions and travel advice can be obtained from the Alston Tourist Information Centre.
