Appleby Horse Fair
The ancient tradition of horse trading brings thousands of gypsies and travellers to Appleby-in-Westmorland, a small Cumbrian town on the banks of the River Eden.
Appleby Horse fairly is held annually in the first week of June, from the Thursday to the following Wednesday.
It is the largest gypsy horse fair in Europe and is attended by over 40,000 gypsies, travellers and other visitors.
Traditions include running and displaying horses on ‘Flashing Lane’ (Long Marton Road) and washing horses in the River Eden.
Gypsies and travellers reside on Fair Hill, just north of the town. Stalls here sell a variety of goods including saddlery.
The video below shows shows some of the sights from around the town centre.
Appleby Horse Fair is not formally organised by any organisation. A group of public sector organisations that includes the police, district and county councils, RSPCA helps ensure it runs smoothly and causes as little disruption to residents as possible.
