Chorley

Chorley is a small town in Lancashire, roughly 8 miles south of Preston, and with a population of just over 30,000.

The town is famous for its markets which date back to the 15th century. The open air Flat Iron market is held every Tuesday and features over 100 stalls selling a wide range of goods at knockdown prices, while the Covered Market (open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday) enjoys a good reputation for quality food and produce.

Despite its small size Chorley has a good selection of attractions.

Botany Bay, a former cotton mill on the edge of the town, now offers 5 floors of shopping, 3 restaurants, and a children’s play area.

Astley Hall was built in the 17th century and now serves as the town’s museum. It is noted for its collections of oak furniture and Flemish tapestries.

The Camelot Theme Park will appeal to younger visitors, while the 700-acre Yarrow Valley Park is popular spot for rest and recreation.

Rather bizarrely, Chorley is also home to the largest Mormon temple outside Salt Lake City.

Hotels

Hotels in Chorley town centre itself are a little thin on the ground. Charnock Richard lies to the west of the town and is home to the Welcome Lodge and the Park Hall Hotel (both convenient for Camelot). The Shaw Hill Hotel is just over a mile north of Chorley and boasts its own golf course and leisure club.

Though strictly in Bolton, the De Vere Whites and Ramada are around 9 miles from Chorley. Other options within reasonable driving distance include the Kilhey Court Hotel in Wigan, and Farington Lodge and the Leyland Hotel (both in Leyland).
