Stonyhurst College
Situated close to the pretty village of Hurst Green, Stonyhurst College is an internationally famous Roman Catholic boarding school. Past pupils include Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holes, and peace campaigner and political activist Bruce Kent. J.R.R. Tolkien spent much of his time writing the Lord of the Rings while visiting his son here.
The college is open to the public from mid-July to the end of August. Tours include the dormitories, library, chapels, classrooms and gardens.
