Vernon Park

Vernon Park opened in 1858 and is Stockport’s oldest park. Built on land donated to the council by Lord Vernon, it was built by poor mill workers and is often referred to as Pinch Belly Park.

Covering 21 acres this Victorian park features a bandstand, bowling greens, water features, a fernery, sunken rose garden, herbaceous borders, rockery and numerous other historical plant collections. Vernon Park Museum is also here and boasts a tea room with fantastic views of the park.

Facilities at the park include a car park and public toilets with baby changing facilities and disabled access.

Vernon Park is located just east of Stockport town centre, on the way to Bredbury.

I lived in Stockport all my life until I moved to Spain 8 years ago. I must have been in the Park as a kiddie but cant really remember. I've just been back to Stockport to stay with friends nearby and we had a lovely walk through the park last Sunday morning. My partner used to live on the old Alpine Road nearby and visited regularly with her dad, who used to sit her in a "big" rock. The rock doesn't seem as big now but it brought back great memories for her. We both enjoyed our walk in the fantastic park, it is a treasure that should be enjoyed by future generations.

I worked as a gardener 43 years ago and mowed the 2 greens till they looked like velvet. The park is a shadow of it's former glory, as kids we called it the lower park, and its neighbour Woodbank, the dog park. Still worth a walk around them both.
