Britannia Hotel Wigan

Ignore the name, as this hotel is actually in Standish, a small town 4 miles to the north of Wigan.

Just off junction 27 of the M6 motorway, the Britannia Wigan offers 124 rooms, all with en-suite bathroom, TV, direct dial telephone, hairdryer, trouser press and hospitality tray.

The hotel also offers a restaurant, bar, health club (small fee payable) and on-site car parking.

Doubt if this is anyone's favourite hotel, but I think some of the reviews I read were a little unfair. I had a cheap basic room which was clean and comfortable and served its purpose. On top of that I found the staff friendly and efficient.

This place has definitely seen better days, but as somewhere to just get your head down for the night it's not that bad. Main thing for us was that the bed was clean and we got a decent breakfast in the morning to help us on our way.
