Wigan Pier
Made famous by its reference in George Orwell’s book, Wigan Pier is situated on the banks of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. Warehouses, where boats once unloaded their cargo, now hold exhibits that celebrate the town’s industrial heritage. These include:
- The Way We Were – an authentic recreation of Victorian life.
- Trencherfield Mill Engine – the world’s largest working steam engine.
- Opie’s Museum of Memories – explores domestic life in Britain since the Industrial Revolution.
