Car
Wigan is situated immediately east of the M6 motorway. Drivers coming from the south should leave at Junction 25 and take the A49 to the town centre. Those coming from the north should exit at Junction 27 and take the A5209/A49 to the reach the town centre.
Wigan Council operates a number of car parks in the town centre. The biggest include the multi-storey car parks at the Galleries on Mesnes Street (625 spaces – WN1 1QP), Mesnes Terrace (325 spaces – WN1 1QB), and Water Street (520 spaces).
There are also car parks at the Grand Arcade shopping centre.
Coach
The National Express coach service from Blackpool to London stops at Preston, Chorley, Wigan, Leigh, Birmingham, and Coventry.
Wigan is also served by the National Express service from Whitehaven to London. Stops on the route include Keswick, Grasmere, Ambleside, Windermere, Barrow-in-Furness, Kendal, Carnforth, Morecambe, Lancaster, Preston, Wigan, and Birmingham.
Train
Wigan has two train stations; Wigan North Western and Wigan Wallgate. Both are situated on Wallgate, at the southern end of the town centre.
Wigan North Western
Virgin Trains run a service between Glasgow and Birmingham New Street. Stops include Carlisle, Penrith, Lancaster, Preston, Wigan North Western, Warrington Bank Quay, Crewe and Wolverhampton.
The Virgin Trains service between Edinburgh and Birmingham New Street calls at Carlisle, Oxenholme Lake District, Lancaster, Preston, Wigan North Western Warrington Bank Quay, Crewe, and Wolverhampton.
The Virgin Trains service from Preston to London Euston calls at Wigan North Western and Warrington Bank Quay.
The Virgin Trains service from Edinburgh to London Euston stops at Carlisle, Oxenholme Lake District, Lancaster, Preston, Wigan North Western, Warrington Bank Quay, Crewe, Wolverhampton, Birmingham New Street, Birmingham International, Coventry, and Milton Keynes Central.
Northern Rail operates a train from Wigan North Western to Liverpool Lime Street. Stops include St Helens Central and Prescot.
The Northern Rail service from Blackpool North to Liverpool South Parkway calls at Preston, Leyland, Wigan North Western, St Helens Central, and Liverpool Lime Street.
Northern Rail offers a direct train from Wigan North Western to Manchester Victoria.
Wigan Wallgate
All train services from Wigan Wallgate are operated by Northern Rail.
Their train from Manchester Airport to Southport calls at Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Oxford Road, Deansgate, Salford Crescent, and Wigan Wallgate. The Northern Rail train from Manchester Victoria to Kirkby also passes through Wigan Wallgate.
Other trains include direct services to Manchester Victoria (via Bolton) and Rochdale (via Bolton and Manchester Victoria).
