Muslim Prayers and the Five Pillars of Islam

Islam is one of the largest religions in the world, with around 2 billion followers worldwide. The religion is based on five core tenets, known as the Five Pillars of Islam.

These pillars are essential to practicing Islam and are meant to help guide Muslims in their day-to-day lives. Understanding these pillars is an important step in learning about the faith.

The pillars are:

  • Shahada – The declaration of faith that there is only one God and Muhammad is his Prophet.
  • Salat – Prayers said five times a day facing Mecca.
  • Zakat – Giving to those in need.
  • Sawm – Fasting during the month of Ramadan.
  • Hajj – A pilgrimage to Mecca that must be undertaken at least once in a lifetime if possible.

Prayer is one of the most important pillars. Muslims are required to pray five times a day:

  • Fajr – Dawn
  • Dhuhr – Midday
  • Asr – Afternoon
  • Maghrib – Sunset
  • Isha – Nightfall

Each prayer must be said at the correct time.
