Leigh Sports Village opened in 2009 and is one of the North West’s finest recreational and leisure complexes. Situated in Leigh, in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, it offers a wide range of sports facilities, a hotel, pub, supermarket, and sixth form college.
The Leigh Sports Village Stadium is the centrepiece of the development. The state-of-the art stadium can seat 11,000 and is home to Leigh Centurions Rugby League Club and Blackburn Rovers Football Club Reserves. Manchester United chose to play their Barclays U21 Premier League fixtures here for the 2014/15 season.
Leigh Indoor Sports Centre lies just south of the stadium. It boasts a 6-lane 25m swimming pool with spectator seating, a gym, and a sports hall with badminton, basketball, and netball courts.
Another major sporting venue here is the Leigh Sports Village Athletics Stadium. Home to Leigh Harriers Athletics Club, it includes an 8-lane running track, two 110m straights, long jump and pole vault areas, plus shot put and javelin areas. The stadium is floodlit and has spectator seating.
There are also a number of sports pitches at the complex suitable for rugby, football etc.
The Holiday Inn Express Leigh Sports Village is located at the southern end of the site and offers 135 rooms. It was previously the Park Inn Leigh.
In November 2011 supermarket chain Morrisons opened a large supermarket here. As well as selling a wide range of food items, the store also features an excellent café and a petrol station. At the time of writing (May 2015) the supermarket is open Monday to Saturday 8 am to 11 pm, and Sunday 10 am to 4 pm.
In 2012 Marston’s opened the Whistling Wren. Located close to the main entrance, this family-friendly pub can accommodate up to 180 customers and offers a popular two-for-one menu.
Wigan & Leigh College’s Sixth Form Centre is also based at Leigh Sports Village.
