Stock Ghyll is a stream running through the centre of Ambleside. During the Industrial Revolution it provided the power for the town’s fulling and bobbin mills.
A circular walk through the woods around Stock Ghyll offers great views of Stock Ghyll Force, one of the most picturesque and easily accessible waterfalls in the Lake District.
Start in the town centre behind Barclays Bank/Ambleside Salutation and follow Stock Ghyll Lane for around ¼ mile until you see the entrance on the left.
The viewing platform at the top of the waterfall offers disabled access.
The best time to see the Stock Ghyll Force in its full glory is after heavy rain.
